Chapter 16

Luna

Blaze held out his hand, palm up, and the air took on a strange quality as if it were breaking up into pieces like a mosaic. In that strange cracked and crumpled space, something took shape in Blaze’s hand. A figure, hunched-over, somewhat human in form, but misshapen, its color a brownish-reddish, earthy hue. It had a face like a gargoyle’s, and its back was studded, like the cones of volcanoes or geysers. It uncurled into a crouch in Blaze’s hand and sat there and blinked at the students, a living thing not of this world, brown irises in its eyes like a human’s.

For a moment, I didn’t know how my classmates were feeling just then, but I felt as though my spine were the pole in a firehouse and something was sliding down it.

What the hell was that thing? A goblin.

“This is a Jann,” Blaze said, as if answering my inner thought. “A djinn with an affinity for the earth element. You know, the rocks, trees, and the soil. As you will quickly learn, they like to call their friends to join them.”

On cue, the creature in Blaze’s hand stood upright and leapt from his palm down onto the grass. Most in the class, me included, gasped at the djinn’s sudden move and its seeming freedom to do as it wished. Nelle remained cool, calm and collected, almost as if she were Blaze’s twin or something.

As if sensing everyone wanted to back off and perhaps run for cover, the instructor commanded the students, “Stay where you are. Don’t move. Just watch.”

Uneasiness flared inside me as the djinn hunched over on the grass. It opened its mouth wide, emitting a sound like the blowing of some ancient horn, making my spine vibrate. That wasn’t the only thing tingling. Something was happening in the soil under my feet. The earth was stirring and churning, like bubbles in gravy cooking on a stove. Little clay men poked out from the soil, wrenching themselves out of the turf, running around all covered in dirt. It reminded me of the creepy cadaver that had stalked me last night and made me feel sick. They were as large as puppies or toddlers, and all looked the same. None of them friendly.

While Blaze might have commanded us to stand our ground, he could not tell me not to react, and I did, along with a few members of the class. I covered my ears at the grinding noises, like stones being scraped together, making my stomach sink. This gave me the hunch that the little creatures were talking to each other. I didn’t want to know what they were saying. Somehow I got the impression it was mischievous.

My gaze flicked between the shocking tableau of rock and soil monsters rising from the courtyard, leaving dark patches of torn and disrupted soil in their wake, to the horrifyingly calm expression of the teacher.

“What the hell is that?” one student asked, a pretty girl with bangs and dead-straight hair, as angular and harsh as her face.
